Five of Cups

Disruption in the feeling life

The card

With the Five of Cups, we experience the first moment of dark clouds in the suit. It is a moment of reflection on what may or may not align within and without. It may be a sober assessment of our emotional life or a fit of emotional outburst. The beauty of this card is that it empowers us to discard that which does not serve and hold onto what nourishes us — a separating of the proverbial wheat from the chaff. We hold our heart to a higher standard and all that does not resonate falls away like a crystal glass to a stone floor. As with all expressions of the V (five) in the tarot, the influence of the Hierophant is here, so a bit of sacrifice and selflessness will be required to transition to the next moment.

What no longer serves the life within you through emotion, memory, intimacy, and relationship?

The archetype in motion

A settled pattern is disturbed so that value, belief, and sacrifice can be reconsidered. Here it moves through emotion, memory, intimacy, and relationship. Its gift becomes available when the reader can hold both its conscious expression and the less comfortable possibility carried in its shadow.
