Beneath the skirts of Mucha’s figure of wanton celebration hides Pan, pulling at the subject, seducing her into an even more intoxicating experience. Hovering in the background are the monsters of Bosch and Redon, curiously observing the calamity and hoping to catch a closer glimpse of the chaos unfolding. The color red dominates the scene, alluding to the heights of unbridled passion. The theme suggests yet another experience at the border of two worlds—the enticements of the physical realm reflected back to us with all the distortment of a funhouse mirror.
The Devil card is often a warning of excess, but can be an indication of the need to embrace your shadow side. Be wary of any substance or object of desire that may threaten your wellbeing. At the same time, this could be the right moment to acknowledge that which lies in the shadows of your soul. Examine the ways in which you pass judgement on your hidden desires and do not be afraid to give yourself over to a wanton celebration now and then. Acknowledge the shadows within you, but do not lose sight of yourself in the darkness.
