Three of Hearts

Two Roman households joined by marriage didn't just gain a relative — they gained a third entity, a new gens with its own name and its own future, larger than either family alone. That's the arithmetic here: this isn't addition, it's multiplication. Something now exists that answers to neither person individually. Jung's language for this is the coniunctio — not two things touching, but a third thing being born from the meeting, with its own life the parents can guide but no longer fully control. A mother's ferocity over her child is the clearest version: love that has stopped being a feeling between two people and become a structure that outlives either of their moods.
