Eight of Hearts

Fides — good faith, the keeping of one's word — was serious enough in Rome to be given its own temple and its own priesthood; a promise, once made publicly, was treated as a debt as real as money. The Eight is that fides fully honored: emotion so clearly earned and so plainly returned that it starts to feel like it belongs to something larger than the two people involved. Jung's language for this register is numinous — the ordinary shot through, briefly, with the timeless. Justice shows up here too, in its oldest sense: not punishment, but the simple, satisfying fact of things finally squared. Let yourself receive this, not just extend it.
