Three of Spades

The philosophes wrote their most radical claims and then, often, sat on them for years — publication meant exposure to censors, rivals, and one's own doubt in equal measure. The Three shows that same procession: ideas lined up and ready, and still something flinches before the actual birth of them into the world. This is close to Van Gogh painting a dying flower with total devotion to a single vase — not withdrawal from life, but an almost unbearable degree of attention turned inward. Jung's introversion at its most productive lives here: not isolation as failure, but isolation as the only room quiet enough for this particular kind of looking. If this card feels lonely, that loneliness is only the doorway. Go through it, don't camp in the hallway.
