Two of Hearts

Rome had a word, palam, for anything done in full view rather than behind a wall — and a separate legal weight attached to promises made that way. The Two insists on this same exposure: love only becomes real once it's no longer a private arrangement between two interior lives, but a thing announced where others can see it. Jung's anima and animus stop being projections the moment they're spoken aloud to the person carrying them — the fantasy has to survive contact with an actual, particular other. There's a kind of bravery in that daylight, since a feeling kept secret can always be revised in private, but a feeling said out loud has to be lived up to.
